Changing Lives: Tour Participants Volunteer in Israel

After months of anticipation, JLGB Israel Tour has finally jetted off for a three week summer adventure its participants will never forget!

In the week since Tour17 landed in Israel the group have experienced a blend of ancient and modern Israeli culture. They have stood before the Kotel (Western Wall), the holiest site in Jerusalem, and followed in the tradition of tucking a note with a personal wish into the Kotel’s crevices. They have waded through the water tunnels which date back to around 7th century BCE, underneath the archaeological City of David site, and watched a modern dramatic comedy about religious tolerance called “The Four Faces of Israel.” Feasting on traditional Bedouin cuisine and tea, our adventurers learned about the minority group’s culture which once led them to cross the Israeli Negev on camelback.

Last Monday Tour focused on social action and volunteering. Dressed in evolve t-shirts, Tour 17 was on a mission to help those less fortunate than ourselves and do good in society. Our intrepid volunteers ran activities for children in years 1 – 4 at a local school in Sderot. Shira Colombick said “The children were really enthusiastic and joined in with all of the activities we ran; it was a great experience."

evolve is JLGB’s response to the ever-changing needs of young Jewish volunteers. For the first time, evolve brings together all key stakeholders from across the community to ensure that social action becomes more accessible and more rewarding for Jewish young people than ever before.

Other highlights included hiking the long trail up to Masada to behold the breath-taking sunrise, floating in the Dead Sea, and abseiling down Rimon Crater.

Throughout the three week Tour, our group will be immersed in Israeli culture as they discover and learn about Israeli history, explore the social, economic and political issues through volunteering, and marvel at Israeli innovation in technology. It is this combination of old and new that makes Israel Tour with JLGB unique.
