🌟 Europe Tour 2024 - A Leader's Perspective on an Unforgettable Journey

As one of the leaders on JLGB's Europe Tour 2024, I can honestly say it was a journey unlike any other. Watching 84 young participants grow, bond, and thrive over the course of just 11 days was nothing short of extraordinary. What started as an alternative to the usual Israel Tour became something so much more – a vibrant, educational, and emotional experience that none of us will ever forget.

From London to Brussels: The Journey Begins
From the moment we departed London, the energy was infectious. As we set off via Eurotunnel, I could already see the excitement in everyone’s eyes. Our first stop in Ypres, where we explored the history of WWI, was a sobering yet fascinating way to begin the tour. As I watched the group absorb the significance of the site, it became clear that these young people were ready to take on everything Europe had to offer. By the time we reached Antwerp for dinner, it felt like we had already travelled much further than a day’s distance – friendships were forming, and the group’s shared journey was truly beginning.

Brussels: From Fun to Reflection
Brussels was a whirlwind! The Atomium left everyone awestruck, and exploring Mini Europe was like taking a mini adventure around the world. But it wasn’t all lighthearted. Our visit to Fort Breendonk brought a deeper sense of reflection, a reminder of Europe’s turbulent history and the importance of understanding where we come from. It was incredible to watch the participants engage with these contrasting experiences, one moment laughing and learning, the next discussing the more challenging lessons of the past. They were already growing before my eyes.

Antwerp and Amsterdam: Sweet Memories and Deep Connections
The walking tour of Antwerp’s Jewish life was a real highlight for me as a leader. The participants were fascinated by the rich Jewish history of the city, and you could feel their pride as they explored the Old Synagogue. Then came the visit to Chocolate Nation, and, of course, everyone left with a huge smile – and a bit of chocolate on their hands!

But it was in Amsterdam where I truly saw the magic of the tour come alive. From our vibrant bike tour around the city to the creative spray paint session where we made our own tour banner, the group was bonding in ways that I’ve never seen before. It felt like every activity was a step closer to them becoming not just friends, but a family.

Shabbat in Holland: A Time for Reflection
Shabbat was a special moment for us all. After days of excitement, we had the chance to slow down, reflect, and reconnect. The games and activities brought everyone closer, but it was the Havdallah ceremony that left me with chills. Watching the group come together, sharing such a meaningful experience, was a reminder of why we do what we do. It was a moment where you could feel the power of community and tradition, and I knew that these young people would carry this sense of togetherness with them long after the tour ended.

Cologne and Luxembourg: History Comes to Life
I watched in awe as the group explored Cologne’s Jewish history, starting at the Roonstraße Synagogue and moving through the ancient Mikvah. It wasn’t just the places we visited – it was the conversations these young people were having, the questions they were asking, the reflections they shared with one another. They weren’t just seeing history; they were connecting with it on a deep level, and that’s something I’ll never forget. In Luxembourg, the exploration continued, and it was incredible to see how engaged and curious the participants remained, even as we neared the end of the tour.

Ghent: The Perfect Ending
Our final stop in Ghent felt almost surreal. It was hard to believe the tour was coming to an end, but what an ending it was! Free time to explore the beautiful town, a relaxing boat tour on the River Leie, and a final group photo that captured the essence of everything we’d been through together. As a leader, there’s nothing more rewarding than seeing the joy and fulfilment on the faces of the young people you’ve guided. This group had grown in ways I never expected – not just as individuals, but as a team, a family.

More Than Just a Tour
Looking back on Europe Tour 2024, it’s hard to put into words just how special it was. I saw 84 young people arrive full of excitement and curiosity, and I watched them leave with a deeper sense of purpose, connection, and identity. This tour wasn’t just about exploring new places – it was about discovering themselves and their heritage, building friendships that will last a lifetime, and stepping into their roles as the next generation of leaders.

For me, as a leader, it was a privilege to be part of that journey. From late-night chats to shared moments of reflection, from the highs of theme parks and bike tours to the quiet depth of historical visits, this tour showed me once again the power of JLGB to inspire, uplift, and empower young people.

Europe Tour 2024 was more than we ever imagined – and I know it’s left an indelible mark on everyone who was part of it.
