Born in Manhattan, Alan developed an interest in music at an early age, taking piano and violin lessons. Alan went on later to study Musicology at NYU and then specialised in Musical Theatre at the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop, where he was mentored by the great Lehman Engel, himself a legendary composer and conductor of Broadway musicals, film and television of the 1950s and 60s.  

Alongside his writing partner, the late great Howard Ashman, Alan’s career took off after writing the ‘off Broadway’ smash hit musical, Little Shop of Horrors.  Together they became key figures in the Disney Renaissance, creating the soundtrack for everyone’s absolute favourite Disney musicals of all time, including The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin. 

Alan has won eight Academy Award wins, making him one of the most prolific Oscar winners ever! He has also won 11 Grammy Awards, a Tony Award, and a Daytime Emmy Award among many other honours.  In July 2020, he became just one of sixteen people to have achieved the legendary EGOT status, having won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony! And... if that wasn't enough, Alan received his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2010!
